Carl J. Gerhard

Carl Gerhard began serving as course director of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in January 2017. 

A native of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1985 and spent over 30 years of both active enlisted and commissioned service. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Roger Williams University and also holds the Navy’s Master Training Specialist designator. 

Following various assignments in the U.S. and overseas, he was selected for chief petty officer in 2000 while serving as senior courses academic instructor at the Naval School of Music. Gerhard was selected and commissioned as a limited duty officer in 2001, and served as assistant fleet bandmaster, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk, Virginia; fleet bandmaster, U.S. 7th Fleet, Yokosuka, Japan; director, Navy Band Northeast, Newport, Rhode Island; and as executive officer, Naval School of Music, Virginia Beach, Virginia. 

Following his retirement from the Navy in 2015, he served as a training facilitator for Leadership Solutions Associates, LLC, providing supervisory leadership and management training, specifically for Department of the Defense personnel. Gerhard also is an active freelance musician, conductor and music educator. He actively tours, performs, and records with various musical organizations throughout New England and across the United States. 

His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (five awards) and various campaign and other service awards.
