Commanding Officer

Cmdr. Andrew Newsome is a native of Denver, Colorado, and grew up in Somerset, Kentucky. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1998. He holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School.

Newsome graduated with distinction from primary and intermediate naval flight officer training. In June 1999, while assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 120, he was accepted for a lateral transfer to special duty cryptology.

His operational assignments include surface direct support officer at Naval Security Group Activity San Diego, where he deployed aboard USS Russell (DDG 59) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; division officer on the U.S. 7th Fleet staff embarked aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19); and flag cryptologist on the Carrier Strike Group 10 staff, embarked aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

His shore and staff assignments include Navy Information Operations Command Maryland as department head and graduate of the Junior Officer Cryptologic Career Program; information warfare officer and cyber warfare engineer community manager at the Bureau of Naval Personnel; executive assistant to the Director of Intelligence at U.S. Cyber Command; and deputy chief of operations for the Joint Intelligence Operations Center at U.S. Cyber Command.

Newsome assumed command of Information Warfare Training Command Monterey in December 2015.

His military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, as well as multiple unit awards.

Executive Officer

Lieutenant Commander Smith graduated from Saint Leo University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, and attended Cryptologic Officer Basic Training. He later graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School with a Master of Science in Information Warfare Systems Engineering, while also completing Joint Professional Military Education (Phase 1) certification.

At sea, he served as ship’s cryptologic officer aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5), where he performed the duties of electronic warfare (EW) officer and Ship's Signals Exploitation Space (SSES) division officer and stood watch as Combat Information Center watch officer; as ship’s information warfare officer aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit Gridley (DDG 101), where he earned his surface warfare officer qualification, served as SSES and EW Module division officer and stood watch underway as officer of the deck; and as cryptologic resource coordinator for Carrier Strike Group 1, where he managed cryptologic operations across 20 U.S. and allied ships, while completing Carl Vinson Strike Group’s Fleet Readiness Training Plan and deployment to U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.

His shore tours include duty with Naval Security Group Activity Denver for his first assignment as a signals intelligence watch officer, completing his cryptologic officer basic qualification and serving as assistant department head for Alpha Crew; and with Navy Information Operations Command Hawaii as Officer Qualification Program manager, Direct Support department head and Cyber Operations department head.

He currently serves as executive officer, Information Warfare Training Command Monterey, California.

Smith’s personal awards include the Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Command Master Chief

Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Christopher C. Stevens, a native of Wichita, Kansas, calls Kansas City, Missouri home. He enlisted in the Navy in 1993, and after basic training at Recruit Training Command San Diego, he graduated from the Defense Language Institute in 1994 and completed training at Naval Security Group Activity Monterey and Naval Technical Training Center Detachment Goodfellow. He is designated a specialist in information and submarine warfare.

His assignments include Naval Security Group Activity Kunia; Naval Information Warfare Activity Suitland; Center for Information Dominance Detachment Monterey; Navy Information Operations Command Maryland; Center for Information Dominance; Naval Information Forces; and duty aboard 13 Pacific Fleet combatants.

He currently serves as the senior enlisted leader Information Warfare Training Command Monterey.

His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), and various campaign and unit decorations.
