Command Officer

A native of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Commander Knapp graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College in New York City with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a master's degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

At sea, CDR Knapp served in various operations and engineering assignments aboard USS Trenton (LPD 14), USS Whirlwind (PC 11), Amphibious Squadron SIX (embarked on LHD 3), USS Ashland (LSD 48), Amphibious Squadron Seven (embarked on LHD 6) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), participating in numerous exercises, overseas deployments and national missions.

Ashore, he served as a steam engineering instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, Rhode Island and at Fleet Weather Center, Norfolk as the Strike Group Oceanography Team Department Head and the Operations Department Head.

On 2 November 2015, CDR Knapp assumed duties as the Executive Officer at Fleet Weather Center, Norfolk, Virginia.

CDR Knapp assumed duties as CNATTU Keesler commanding officer in October 2016.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Command Master Chief

Command Master Chief James Contreras, a native of Katy, Texas, enlisted in the Navy in September 1992. Following completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command San Diego, California, he reported to Naval Technical Training Center Meridian, Mississippi, completing logistics specialist technical training. Contreras later completed a Bachelor of Science in Management and is a graduate of the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy. He is designated as a specialist in surface, aviation and information warfare.

At sea, he served aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), guided-missile destroyers USS Howard (DDG 83) and USS Barry (DDG 52), and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and lastly USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) as the department master chief petty officer during the ship’s redelivery back to the fleet from a four-year refueling complex overhaul.

Contreras’ shore tours include Naval Air Station, Kingsville, Texas; Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Houston Consortium Rice University, Houston, Texas; and Naval Special Warfare Group 10, Virginia Beach, Virginia, serving as group logistics master chief in support of naval special warfare forces conducting special operations, intelligence, and surveillance and reconnaissance for combatant commanders and other government agencies.

Contreras reported as command master chief, Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Keesler in December 2017.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (eight awards), Army Achievement Medal, various unit and campaign awards.
