School Infomation

DAHLGREN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS

http://www.am.dodea.edu/ny_va/dahlgren/

Eligibility to attend Dahlgren School:

Dependent children of Armed Forces members assigned to and residing on Naval Support Facility, Dahlgren or permanent housing as assigned by the Housing Office, are eligible to attend Dahlgren School.

Should the Armed Forces member be transferred or retire after the first day of the school year, and the family has to "clear" housing, the member's child/children may continue to attend the Dahlgren School for the remainder of that year. They will not, however, be eligible to attend the following school year.

If housing is not immediately available on the member's report date, but the Housing Office certifies that it is expected to be available within 90 school days from their report date, the member's child/children may attend the Dahlgren School while residing in an areas adjacent to the base. Transportation to and from school and transportation for the lunchtime break is the responsibility of the parent.

The base will evaluate housing applications to determine if it is likely that housing will be available within 90 days. If it is determined that housing will not be available, the children will not be eligible to attend Dahlgren School. The children may transfer, however, at any time during the year, once on-base housing has been signed.

DAHLGREN SCHOOL

Inclusive Grades: Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8.

Developmental Screenings: Screenings will be offered to "at risk" 3-and-4 year olds whose parents reside on base or who are in an eligible status for on-base housing. Children will be screened in the areas of fine and gross motor concepts, speech and language, hearing and vision, and social behavior. If delays are apparent in the screening, more in-depth testing will be recommended. Further evaluations will be completed by the school system. If significant delays are noted, a pre-school program will be recommended.

Kindergarten: All students who will be age 5 by 30 September will be eligible for kindergarten. Those students becoming 5 between 01 October and 31 October are eligible to attend kindergarten, but must be tested to confirm placement in either kindergarten or the pre-school program.

Registration Procedures: All new students will need to bring with them at the time of registration: Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Immunization Records, and a current Physical Certification (dated within one year of the date of registration).

Holidays: All Federal Holidays are observed. In addition, the school is closed during Christmas Holidays and also during Spring Break. These dates, as well as the Teacher Workdays, Conference Days, and other planned school closures will be on the school year calendar. This calendar can be found in the student handbook your child will receive during the first week of school.

Ombudsman Welcome Letter

Welcome Aboard from the Ombudsman:

Dear Family.

Welcome to the Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) family.

The Navy Ombudsman Program is a Navy-wide program established to improve mission readiness through improved family readiness. A strong command Ombudsman Program, both ashore and afloat, helps ensure families have the information necessary to meet the challenges of a military lifestyle.

As ATRC’s Ombudsman, I am your direct link to the command leadership. A military family’s road is often narrow and ever bending. We often find ourselves in need of someone to talk with who understands our turmoil. I can help.

I am a referral agent to local resources available to Navy families and can assist you in finding answers to your questions. Ombudsmen are friends, not crutches; we are listeners, not counselors.

For more information on the Navy’s Ombudsman Program visit the Commander, Naval Installations Command Web site.

If you would like to be on the mailing list, send me an e-mail at atrcombud@gmail.com or call (540) 850-1162.

We hope your stay in Dahlgren is a pleasant one. Have a safe trip here and a fun journey through your Naval career.

Genni Larson
ATRC Ombudsman
