CAPT Lennie Reed, raised in Gambrills, Maryland, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1990, majoring in Political Science and Economics. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1992 and a patrol plane pilot in 1994.
In August 2018, he founded the office of NROTC Preparatory Programs. Prior to this, no programs existed to help individuals whose family, social, or economic circumstances hindered their ability to prepare for entry into a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program. The office mission is to expand NROTC opportunities to produce a more diverse representative and capable Naval Officer Corps. The preparatory office supports talented and motivated students who lack competitive academic resumes with opportunities designed to assist them in closing collegiate STEM preparedness gaps.
In August 2019, CAPT Reed reported as the first Director of NROTC Preparatory Programs. As Director, he led the growth of various preparatory programs to include over 150 college and high school students supported by over 21 universities across the country.
From August 2016 through July 2019, CAPT Reed served as the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Hampton Roads Commanding Officer, Professor of Naval Science, and Naval Science Department Chair for an NROTC consortium consisting of Old Dominion, Hampton and Norfolk State Universities.
