Captain Brian T. Mutty

Capt. Brian T. Mutty is a native of Portsmouth, Va., and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1992 and was commissioned in 1995 through U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School at Pensacola, Florida.

Mutty’s first assignment at sea was onboard USS Bainbridge (CGN 25) as a nuclear-trained machinist's mate. Subsequent sea duty assignments include USS Laboon (DDG 58), USS Austin (LPD 4), USS Cole (DDG 67) and USS Ross (DDG 71). He was the first executive officer to “fleet up” to commanding officer aboard USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62). While aboard Fitzgerald, his unit won the Battle Effectiveness, Anti-Submarine Warfare Bloodhound and Edward F. Ney Awards. His unit was also the Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 flagship in support of Operation Tomodachi, hosted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the signing of the Manila Declaration and conducted the largest live fire ballistic missile defense test to date. As commanding officer on USS Essex (LHD 2), Mutty deployed to the Arabian Gulf, served as Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) sea combat commander and conducted the first ever combat deployment of the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter. He has deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Black Sea, Caribbean Sea, North and South Atlantic and Western Pacific.

Ashore, he earned a Master of Arts in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served with Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) N86 as a requirements officer for the littoral combat ship. While at OPNAV N86, he volunteered for an individual augmentation assignment to support Joint Cre Composite Squadron (JCCS) 1 in Mosul, Iraq. He followed his OPNAV N86 tour with an assignment as the chief plans policy branch of the Joint Staff, J-7, Operational War Plans Division. Following his command tour, he reported to Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense as the director, Joint Maritime Operations and served as the chief of staff. He was the deputy director of Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center Integrated Air and Missile Defense Division. After his major command assignment, he was deputy director of Military Personnel, Plans and Policy for OPNAV N1. His last assignment was executive assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel.  

Mutty's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and various other service and unit awards.
