Major J. M. Aviña

Major Aviña enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January of 1996 as a Ground Support Equipment Electrician and is a graduate of University of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. In January of 2004, he was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant. In March of 2005 he graduated The Basic School (TBS). He also holds a Master’s of Science in Global Business Leadership from the University of San Diego (2013).

After TBS, Lt Aviña reported to Whiting Field for Aircraft Maintenance Officer School with follow-on assignment to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 11 (MALS-11). During his time at MALS-11, Lt Aviña held several billets to include Ground Support Equipment OIC and Cryogenics OIC. While at MALS-11 in June 2006, he deployed to Al Asad Iraq and was attached to MALS-16 forward. In January of 2007 he returned to MALS-11 and worked as the Quality Assurance Officer before volunteering to be a part of Border Transition Team 3/5/2 in Trebil, Iraq. After returning to Miramar in September 2008, Captain Aviña was assigned to VMFAT-101 and served as the Material Control Officer (MCO) until Aug of 2010.

In 2010, Captain Aviña transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego where he served as both a Series and Company Commander. After serving at the Recruit Depot Captain Aviña was assigned to MALS-12 as the Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer until April of 2015. He then took over as the units Operations Officer until is transfer in 2016. In 2016 Major Aviña was assigned to Marine Corps Force Central Command in the G-4 as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer. In 2019 Major Aviña was assigned to his current billet as the Executive Officer Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Marine Unit at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

Major Aviña’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 3rd award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 2nd award.
