Commander Sam Brasfield

Cmdr. Brasfield, a native of Demopolis, Alabama, enlisted in the Navy in 1988 and served as an aviation electrician’s mate. He was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1995 and graduated summa cum laude from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management in 1998. He earned a Master of Science in Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict from the Naval Postgraduate School’s Defense Analysis Department in 2008.

After attending Surface Warfare Officers School and completing the Basic Diving Officer course in 1999, Brasfield served as supply officer aboard the mine hunter USS Shrike (MHC 62), where he earned his surface warfare officer pin. He graduated from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) School in 2003.

His following tours include service with EOD Mobile Unit 2 in Little Creek, Virginia, as officer in charge for three detachments, making two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF); U.S. Special Operations Command as assistant program manager for special operations forces (SOF) electronic countermeasures, making multiple deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and OIF; Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, Panama City Beach, Florida, as executive officer (XO); Naval Sea Systems Command Office of the Director of Ocean Engineering (00C) as the Supervisor of Diving; OPNAV N80 “Bullpen” as the SOF/expeditionary programs analyst; Navy ROTC unit at Vanderbilt University as the XO/ assistant professor of naval science; and Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division as a special project officer for the commanding officer.

Brasfield assumed command of Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in June 2018.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Combat Action ribbon and various other personal, unit and campaign awards.

Brasfield holds qualifications as an EOD officer, diving and salvage officer, surface warfare officer, naval parachutist, and enlisted aviation warfare specialist. He is joint qualified. He also holds the qualification of Level II program manager and is a member of the Navy’s Acquisition Corps.
