Captain José G. Hernández

Capt. José G. Hernández, a native of Brooklyn, New York, holds a bachelor’s degree in Natural Science from Dowling College and a master’s in Human Resource Management from Troy University. He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in October 1996.
 
At sea, he served as damage control assistant aboard USS Deyo (DD 989), deploying in support of Standing Naval Force Mediterranean 1998; and training and schedules officer, Destroyer Squadron 22, deploying in support of Standing Naval Force Mediterranean 2000 and NATO exercise Strong Resolve 2002.
 
Ashore, he served as the latin american affairs officer, U.S. Fleet Forces Command; enlisted programs officer, Navy Recruiting District Raleigh; executive officer, Office of Naval Intelligence; legislative liaison to the U.S. Congress, Office of Legislative Affairs; executive assistant to Director, Total Force Management (OPNAV N2/N6); lead for Diversity Plans and Policy (OPNAV N134), Chief of Naval Personnel; policy lead for the Navy’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal implementation panel; commander, Second Battalion, U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command; and director for Manpower & Personnel (N1), Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
 
His joint assignment was as the director of the National Language Service Corps, Office of Secretary of Defense, Defense Language and National Security Education Office.
 
Hernández reported to Center for Service Support as commanding officer in August 2023.
 
He is a qualified surface warfare officer and a certified Human Resource professional. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various other campaign, unit and service awards.
