Commander Michael K. Moreland

Cmdr. Michael Moreland, a native of Winnipeg, Canada, spent the majority of his childhood in southeastern Ontario.  He completed the Aviation and Flight Technology Program at Seneca College in Toronto and graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science.  He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School as a distinguished graduate in September 2000 and his naval aviator wings in January 2003.  He is a 2007 graduate of the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).
 
His operational assignments include tours with Fighter Squadron (VF) 213 for the F-14 Tomcat’s last deployment and transition to the F/A-18F Super Hornet; Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81 as training officer, qualifying as rescue mission commander and deploying aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70); Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 as the administrative and maintenance officer, qualifying as strike lead and again deploying aboard the Carl Vinson; and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 4 as the future operations officer, lead strike and combat operations efficiency assessor. 
 
Ashore, he was assigned to Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center at Naval Air Station Fallon as the training and standardization officer; Tactical Training Group Atlantic as an air and missile defense instructor; and most recently, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic as the deputy director of the air launched weapons team from November 2017 to November 2020, where he also continued his training expertise as an instructor pilot teaching newly winged aviators and flight officers with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106.
 
Moreland is currently serving as the executive officer for Navy Service Support Advanced Training Command (NSSATC), at NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
 
He has accumulated over 2,600 hours of flight time in various aircraft including the F-14 Tomcat, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and all variants of the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet.  He has completed combat deployments in the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility and has led missions in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.
 
Moreland’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, in addition to numerous unit, service and campaign awards.
