Commander Freddie B. Koonce

Cmdr. Koonce, a native of Kinson, North Carolina, began his naval career in August 1990. He attended boot camp in Orlando, Florida. He is a graduate of the University of Management and Technology in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master of Science in homeland security. He was commissioned as an ensign through the Limited Duty Officer Program in 2001.

During his enlisted career, he was assigned to USS George Washington (CVN 73), Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, and USS Kearsarge (LHD 3).

Koonce’s commissioned tours at sea include service as air department’s V4 division officer/aviation fuels officer (fuels bos’n) aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7); air bos’n, V1 division and flight deck officer aboard USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67); night aircraft handling officer, crash and salvage officer, and hangar deck officer aboard the forward deployed naval forces aircraft carrier, USS George Washington (CVN 73); and aircraft handling officer aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

Ashore, he served as airfield support and air operations department head at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan; administrative officer at Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island, California; and N88/aviation department head and Afloat Training Group Pacific carrier training liaison officer for all U.S. Pacific Fleet nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Koonce assumed the duties as the executive officer of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Jacksonville in October 2019.

Currently, Koonce serves as the commanding officer, CNATTU Jacksonville.

His personal awards are Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (two awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (three awards), and numerous other individual and unit awards.
