Cmdr. Karl Hassenfratz, a native of Orchard Park, New York, received his commission after completing a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2005. He earned his Master of Science in Systems Engineering Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
At sea, Hassenfratz served as chemistry and radiological control assistant and communications officer aboard USS Pasadena (SSN 752); navigation and operations officer aboard USS Virginia (SSN 774); and executive officer aboard USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730), where he completed two strategic patrols.
Hassenfratz’s shore tours include serving on the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) staff at the Pentagon as a requirements officer for the Virginia class fast-attack submarine and special operations forces undersea mobility programs within the Undersea Warfare Division (OPNAV N97) in Arlington, Virginia.
He reported as executive officer of Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, in April 2020.
Hassenfratz personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as other unit awards earned by the fine people with whom he has served.
