Senior Chief Construction Electrician Malinda M. Hernandez

Senior Chief Hernandez is a native of Newport, Rhode Island.  She enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 15, 2004 from Houston, Texas and reported to boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.  She attended Construction Electrician “A” School at Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB), Texas in 2005.

She has an associate’s degree from Coastline Community College in Supervision and Management. She attended the Senior Enlisted Academy in December 2017.

Her first duty station was Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 7 in Gulfport, Mississippi, deploying to Kuwait, San Clemente Island, Iraq and Afghanistan.  Her unit completed various electrical projects in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. 

In 2010, she reported to the Naval Support Facility Thurmont, Maryland. As electrical shop leading petty officer, she was responsible for the maintenance and repair of facilities to include a $7.5 million primary and secondary electrical distribution system. 

Upon reporting to Naval Construction Group (NCG) 1, Port Hueneme, California in 2014, she was selected to chief petty officer and assigned as the N73 division leading chief petty officer where she led a team in the instruction of 18 contingency construction courses and five field training exercises for 10 subordinate units.  She was selected to fill as ISIC legal chief her last year where she worked directly for the staff judge advocate providing legal assistance for 10 subordinate units. 

In 2018, she transferred to NMCB-5 and was promoted to senior chief.  She deployed to Okinawa, Japan as the Bravo Five and provided camp maintenance support at Camp Shields and supported various construction projects. During homeport, she performed as operations chief for a heavy detachment during Joint Exercise Pacific Blitz 2019.  She deployed to Palawan, Philippines as the detachment assistant officer in charge.  Her team constructed one school and renovated three additional schools.

Hernandez joined the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Detachment Sheppard AFB team as the senior enlisted leader in 2020.

Her decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
