Commander Damon R. Sumerall

Cmdr. Sumerall enlisted in July of 1987 as an aviation ordnanceman and later earned a commission through the Limited Duty Officer Program.  He graduated from Columbia Southern University with a master’s degree in Business Administration, Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.  He holds dual civilian certifications as a Human Resources Certification Institute-Professional and a Society for Human Resources Management-Certified Professional.
 
While serving as an enlisted Sailor, his operational tours include Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Southern Watch; USS Independence (CV 62); USS Tarawa (LHA 1), and USS Nimitz (CVN 68).  Enlisted tours ashore include Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 47 and Patrol Reconnaissance Wing 10.
 
At sea as a commissioned officer, he served with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 25 as weapons officer deploying aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, and USS Peleliu (LHA 5), as head of weapons department supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.  He also served aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as head of the training department, responsible for the training and certification of 3,100 personnel in multiple warfare areas.  
 
His shore tours include Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific as assistant maintenance officer and weapons officer; Joint Forces Component Command-Global Strike as deputy chief force readiness branch, and U.S. Strategic Command as a weapon systems sustainment analyst for nuclear-powered ballistic missile-carrying submarines, as well as battle staff logistics planner on the airborne command post.  He served as a manpower and legislative analyst in the Total Force Integration Office, Department of the Navy lead action officer for the Cyberspace Workforce Coding Pilot Effort and the congressionally mandated DoD Major Headquarters Activity Re-Baseline Effort on the staff of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy-Manpower and Reserve Affairs.
 
Sumerall recently served as a Secretary of the Navy Tour with Industry Fellow at Apple Inc., where he embedded with the leadership programs team in the Retail Leadership and Development line of business.  He reported as the executive officer at Naval Technical Training Center Lackland in July 2020.
 
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal (First/Strike Flight), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (seven awards), Good Conduct Medal (five awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.  He is authorized to wear the naval aviation observer, enlisted aviation warfare specialist, enlisted surface warfare specialist, and naval aircrew warfare specialist insignia.
