Command Master Chief Eric J. Murphy, Sr.

Command Master Chief Murphy, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1992.  After boot camp at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, he attended Interior Communications Electrician "A" School in San Diego and Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut.  He later converted to navigation electronics technician.  Murphy graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy in November 2012.

At sea, he served aboard USS Providence (SSN 719), completing two U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) deployments; as navigation leading petty officer aboard USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720), completing two six-month deployments in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; with Submarine Squadron 15 Performance Monitoring Team in Guam; and as the maintenance and material management (3M) coordinator and then assistant navigator aboard USS North Carolina (SSN 777) where he qualified as chief of the boat (COB).  Murphy reported to USS New Mexico (SSN 779) in July 2009 as the COB, where he was advanced to master chief petty officer in 2012 and received the Naval Submarine League Frank Lister Award for outstanding leadership as the COB.  He served his second tour as COB aboard USS Virginia (SSN 774) and completed another USEUCOM deployment.

His shore tours include service with the Performance Monitoring Team New London as a Naval Sea Systems Command inspector of oxygen generators and steering and diving systems.

Murphy reported as command master chief, Submarine Learning Center in July 2020.

Murphy’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), Good Conduct Medal (eight awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
