Command Master Chief Carl M. Thompson, a native of Custer, South Dakota, enlisted in the U.S. Navy June 1998, and after boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Aviation Electronics Technician “A” School and Calibration “C” School. He graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelor of Science with honors in Professional Aeronautics. He is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Command Master Chief Capstone Course and the National Defense University Keystone Course. 
 
His operational assignments include USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), where he completed two western Pacific deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; leading chief petty officer of the avionics armament division aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73), where he participated in the hull swap with USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) completing three deployments in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region; and command security manager for Combined Joint Task Force, Horn of Africa.
 
Ashore, he has served aboard Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) Point Mugu, California; AIMD Sigonella, Sicily; and an instructor at Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Lemoore, where he earned his master training specialist qualification and was promoted to chief petty officer.
 
His command master chief assignments include USS Pioneer (MCM 9); USS Germantown (LSD 42); Defense Information Systems Agency European Field Command; and Naval Air Technical Training Center.
 
He reported to Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training as command master chief in April 2024.
 
Thompson is qualified in aviation, surface, expeditionary and information warfare. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards) and various unit, campaign and service awards including the 2014 Bob Feller Act of Valor award.
