Command Master Chief Carl M. Thompson

Command Master Chief Carl M. Thompson, a native of Custer, South Dakota, enlisted in the U.S. Navy June 1998. Following basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Pensacola, Florida, and completed Aviation Electronics Technician “A” School followed by Calibration “C” School at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi.
 
His academic achievements include the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Command Master Chief Capstone Course, and the National Defense University Keystone Course. He holds a Bachelor of Science with honors in Professional Aeronautics from the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and is qualified in aviation, surface, expeditionary and information warfare.
 
Thompson’s sea duty assignments include positions aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), where he completed two western Pacific deployments in support of operation ENDURING FREEDOM and USS George Washington (CVN 73), homeported in Yokosuka Japan, as the leading chief petty officer of the avionics armament division providing support to Carrier Air Wing FIVE and the George Washington Strike Group. During this tour he was part of the hull swap with the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and made three deployments.
 
Ashore, Thompson has served aboard Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) Point Mugu, California; AIMD Sigonella, Sicily; and the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Lemoore, California, as an instructor. During his CNATTU Lemoore tour he earned his master training specialist qualification and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 2009.  He volunteered for an individual augmentee assignment to Djibouti, Africa, in 2012 where he served as the command security manager for the Combined Joint Task Force, Horn of Africa.
 
His Command Master Chief Petty Officer assignments include Command Master Chief of USS Pioneer (MCM 9) and USS Germantown (LSD 42). He also served as Command Master Chief for the Defense Information Systems Agency European Field Command in Stuttgart, Germany.
 
He currently serves as Command Master Chief of NATTC.
 
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards) and various unit, campaign, and service awards including the 2014 Bob Feller Act of Valor award.
