Cmdr. Gilbert L. Bishop II, a native of Longview, Texas, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1997 and attended boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. He commissioned as a limited duty officer in February 2009.
His enlisted assignments include USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71); rescue firefighting chief at Naval Air Station Whiting Field; and USS George Washington (CVN 73).
After commissioning, Bishop reported to Newport, Rhode Island, for Mustang University indoctrination. His officer assignments include crash and salvage officer and night aircraft handling officer aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 63); operations officer at Navy Recruiting District San Antonio; aircraft handling officer aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6); flight deck officer aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68); and aircraft handling officer aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).
Bishop reported to Naval Air Technical Training Center Detachment Lakehurst as officer in charge in July 2022.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and service awards.
