Captain Jeremy (“Jer”) Thompson

Captain Jeremy (“Jer”) Thompson was raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and has earned designation as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer, Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, Diving and Salvage Officer, Surface Warfare Officer, and Naval Parachutist.
His operational tours include:
  • Operations Officer, Salvage ship USS GRASP (ARS-51),
  • Officer in Charge, EOD Mobile Unit THREE Detachment FIVE,
  • EOD Officer, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE,
  • MCM and Force Protection, Carrier Strike Group TWELVE,
  • Operations Officer, EOD Mobile Unit ELEVEN,
  • Executive Officer, Riverine Squadron TWO, where he led 220 teammates in fielding, training, and deploying the first offshore Coastal Riverine capability.
  • Commanding Officer, EOD Mobile Unit ONE, where he led 220 teammates in the development and employment of EOD and Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures (ExMCM) capabilities.
He has conducted EOD, Diving, Salvage, and Mine-Countermeasures operations throughout extensive deployments, to include support to Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.  Most notably, he led an EOD team in the vicinities of Balad and Babylon, Iraq that was responsible for some of the first counter-IED tactics developed in Iraq.
His staff tours include North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he was assigned as a Joint Operations Center Chief. In addition to his work in the NORTHCOM Command Center, he was the primary Maritime Domain Chief for a small deployable team supporting the National Military Command System and Continuity of Government.
During assignment to Navy Headquarters in Washington, D.C. he led all CNO-priority Service, Joint, and Combined wargames, developed future joint and service concepts, guided the Navy’s Irregular Warfare and Counter-WMD policy, and managed the monthly Naval Board forum between Navy and Marine Corps Flag and General Officers.
Most recently, he served as Navy Expeditionary Combat Command’s (NECC) Commanders Action Group (CAG) Director, Deputy N8 (Resources, Requirements, and Force Development), Director of Training (N7), and is transferring from Pearl Harbor, HI where he served as NECC Pacific Chief of Staff.
CAPT Thompson is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and the Naval War College, and was also selected to the Navy’s Politico-Military Masters (PMM) program, earning a Master of International Public Policy degree from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. CAPT Thompson is designated as one of a small cadre of fully qualified Naval Strategists throughout the U.S. Navy. He is a proud member and historical contributor of the Navy and Marine Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association and Mobile Riverine Force Association.
