Lt. Cmdr. Joseph VanBruaene, a native of Carmel, Indiana, earned a bachelor's degree in Finance and Accounting (2006) and a master's in Business Administration with dual concentrations in Financial Analysis and Accounting (2008) from Indiana University. He also earned a master's in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2016. He was commissioned in 2011 through Officer Candidate School.

His operational tours include mission commander for 506 Combat Mission Team; team leader for 61 National Cyber Protection Team; and ship’s signal warfare officer and electronic warfare officer aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68).  

Ashore, he supported the National Security Agency, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and Cyber National Mission Force; he served as the collections manager for Naval Forces Europe, Naval Forces Africa, U.S. 6th Fleet.

VanBruaene reported to Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Keesler Air Force Base as executive officer in July 2023.

His personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal; Navy Commendation Medal (three awards); and various campaign and unit awards.
