Command Master Chief Scott A. Helwig

Master Chief Musician Scott A. Helwig, a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1999 and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command (RTC) in Great Lakes, Illinois. He is a graduate of Basic Musician “A” School and later completed the Unit Leader, Live Production Technician, and Senior Musician “C” School at the Naval School of Music. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (class 208 “Gray”) and the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course (class 22050). He holds a bachelor's degree in Music from James Madison University.
 
His assignments include percussion instrumentalist with Atlantic Fleet Band; unit petty officer in charge with Navy Band Great Lakes; leading petty officer with U.S. Fleet Forces Band; U.S. Pacific Fleet Band leading chief petty officer (LCPO) and chief petty officer in charge (CPOIC) of the 2011 Pacific Partnership Band detachment aboard USS Cleveland (LPD 7); Advance Academics, Percussion, and Rehearsal division instructor at Naval School of Music; U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band's LCPO and CPOIC of numerous ensembles touring throughout Europe and Africa, as well as leading a detachment aboard USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20); U.S. Fleet Forces Band's LCPO; U.S. 7th Fleet Band's assistant director and senior enlisted leader (SEL); and Navy Band Southeast's assistant director and SEL.
 
Helwig assumed the duties as the command master chief and senior instructor at the Naval School of Music in November 2023.
 
Helwig is qualified as an enlisted surface warfare specialist. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (9 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), Armed Forces Service Medal (2 awards), Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and numerous unit and campaign decorations.
