Commander Miles G. Alvarez

Cmdr. Miles G. Alvarez is a native of Los Angeles, California. In 2008, Alvarez was selected as a Cryptologic Warfare Limited Duty Officer. He holds a MA in Defense and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and a MBA from the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business.

Alvarez began his service in 1996, when he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served as a Cryptologic Technician (Collection) for 12 years, three of which were as a chief petty officer.

His enlisted tours include: duty with Naval Security Group Activity Kunia, Hawaii; Commander, Third Fleet embarked USS Coronado (AGF 11) in San Diego, Calif.; a forward deployed special projects team based at Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Maryland; and aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit / USS Stockdale (DDG 106) in Bath, Maine.

His officer tours include: division officer on the USS Essex (LHD 2) in Sasebo, Japan; operations department head at NIOC Whidbey Island, Wash.; Cryptologic Warfare Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/New Accessions/Cyber detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn.; team lead for 600 Combat Support Team NIOC Pensacola, Fla.; cryptologic resource coordinator/collection manager with Commander, Carrier Strike Group Eight in Norfolk, Va., attached to USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75); executive officer of the Fleet Survey Team at Stennis Space Center, Miss.; and most recently deputy information warfare commander/assistant chief of staff for Integrated Fires with Commander, Carrier Strike Group TEN in Norfolk, Va., attached to USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77).

Alvarez assumed command of Information Warfare Training Command Monterey in April 2024.

Alvarez has qualified as an Information Warfare Officer, Surface Warfare Officer, and has earned the Naval Aviation Observer designation. In addition to unit campaign awards, his personal awards include: a Meritorious Service Medal, a Joint Commendation Medal, eight Navy Commendation Medals, two Joint Service Achievement Medals, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
