Capt. Sarah Sherwood, a native of Wilton, Connecticut, graduated in 2001 from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in applied mathematics. She graduated from University of Maryland with a Master of Business Administration in international finance, and she is a graduate of the Naval War College's distance Joint Professional Military Education program.

As a surface warfare officer, her assignments included USS Oldendorf (DD 972); USS Fletcher (DD 992); Destroyer Squadron 21 embarked aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74); policy analyst at Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Division (OPNAV N3/N5); protocol officer at U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT); and flag aide for NAVCENT's deputy commander.

After transitioning to intelligence, she served as the economic intelligence analyst, Commander International Security Assistant Forces Afghanistan; assistant intelligence officer, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75); chief of intelligence plans, China Division, Pacific Intelligence Operations Center, U.S. Pacific Command; defense fellow for Sen. Claire McCaskill; and deputy executive assistant for deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare (N2/N6). Concurrent with her role as chief of intelligence plans, she served as executive officer for Navy Element, Pacific Joint Intelligence Operations Center. Her recent operational assignments include assistant chief of staff for intelligence, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, and information warfare commander, Amphibious Squadron 7. She was commanding officer, Navy Information Operations Command Bahrain; first director, Fleet Information Warfare Center Pacific-Australia; and director of Naval Information Warfighting Development Center San Diego.

Sherwood reported to Center for Information Warfare Training as commanding officer in July 2024.

She is a recipient of the Rear Adm. Thomas Brooks Intelligence Junior Officer of the Year Award (Afloat). Her decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and several unit and service awards.
