Cmdr. Gregory Fritz, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, enlisted in the Navy in 1998 before being commissioned as a limited duty officer bandmaster in October 2010. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Akron, a Master of Education Administration from the University of New Orleans, and a Master of Music in wind band conducting from Arizona State University.
While enlisted, Fritz began his career assigned to the U.S. Navy Steel Drum Band as a percussion instrumentalist. Other enlisted duty stations include Navy Band New Orleans, U.S. 6th Fleet Band, and Navy Band Great Lakes. He has completed the Naval School of Music unit leader and senior musician courses. Fritz served 12 years in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of senior chief petty officer.
He has served officer tours as department head, United States Navy Band; director, Navy Band Northeast; fleet bandmaster, U.S. Fleet Forces Band; and director, Fleet Band Activities.
Fritz reported as the 21st commanding officer at the Naval School of Music in August 2025.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (one award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and Navy Good Conduct Medal (five awards).
