GREAT LAKES, Ill. (June 6, 2023) – Chief Hospital Corpsman Brittani Scholz (right), Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) NROTC Assistant Medical Programs Coordinator, reads the radio message from Lt. Cmdr. John Waldron to the 15 Douglas TBD Devastators pilots and aviation mechanics/backseat gunners of Torpedo Squadron 8 before their attack on Japanese aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway, Scholz also read the names of each member of the squadron who died during the attack (only one survived; Ensign George Gay), while Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class James Davis, Transient Housing Unit Leading Petty Office, strikes a bell once for each name. The commemoration and remembrance as held in the Bluejackets Memorial Chapel, Building 3, Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill. The Battle of Midway occurred 81 years ago June 3-6, 1942 in the Pacific Ocean 500 miles west of Midway Island at the beginning of the United States’ involvement in World War II. (U. S.
