Force Master Chief Matthew Harris, a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1988. He attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois, and completed Naval Submarine School. His academic achievements include the Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 158 Brown; Chief of the Boat (COB)/Command Master Chief (CMC) Capstone course; MCPON Executive Leadership Course; and the National Defense University Keystone Course. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from the University of Charleston and is qualified in submarine and information warfare.
Harris’ sea duty assignments included USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735B),where he completed six strategic deterrent patrols; USS Buffalo (SSN 715); USS Tucson (SSN 770); and USS Columbus (SSN 762) as torpedo division leading chief petty officer (LCPO). During these assignments, he completed numerous deployments to the western pacific as well as a U.S. 5th Fleet deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom. He reported to USS Key West (SSN 722) as the weapons department LCPO, completing western pacific deployments in 2007 and 2009. During his tour, Key West received the Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 3 Battle Efficiency “E” Award for 2007 and 2009 and the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for 2007.
Ashore, Harris has served on the staff of SUBRON 3 and SUBRON 1 as the weapons assistant and anti-terrorism/force protection training officer.
His CMC/COB assignments include COB for USS Texas (SSN 775) from April 2011 to September 2014; CMC for the Defense Information Systems Agency European Field Command from September 2014 to October 2017; and the 20th director of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy from October 2017 to May 2020.
He assumed the duties and responsibilities as the force master chief of Naval Education and Training Command on June 18, 2020.
Harris’ personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), U.S. Army Signal Corps Bronze Order of Mercury, Republic of Austria Gold Fitness Badge and various other unit and campaign awards, although, he is most proud of the Battle Efficiency “E” Awards that he earned with his shipmates.
