CADET INFORMATION

 

What are the Student enrollment eligibility requirements?

  • Be enrolled in and attending a regular course of instruction in a grade 9 through 12 at the school hosting the unit.
  • Be physically qualified to participate fully in the physical education program of the host school.
  • Be selected by the NJROTC instructor with the approval of the school principal or his/her representative.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement and an academic standing that warrants at least normal progression leading to graduation.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of conduct.
  • Comply with specified personal grooming standards. Common sense and good judgment apply to the attainment of these standards. Standards will not be relaxed so as to reflect disgrace on the naval service.
  • Under the secondary school open enrollment policy and when desired by the principal of the host school, students in grades 9-12 who are otherwise ineligible for regular NJROTC enrollment may enroll as special NJROTC cadets. Special NJROTC cadets may participate in school approved NJROTC activities, be called naval cadets, wear the uniform, participate as cadet officers, and go on field trips and orientation visits to military installations. Special NJROTC students may not, however, be counted with that number required to maintain an NJROTC unit. Any special equipment or additional staff that may be needed to instruct special NJROTC students is provided by the school.
 

BASIC FACTS

 
  • 583 NJROTC Units and 31 NNDCC Units as of January 2017.
  • 88,719 students in NJROTC & NNDCC programs, School Year 17/18.
  • 61% of graduates continue to post-secondary education (including ROTC programs and military academies).
  • 47% of program graduates intend to enter military service.
  • 61% of students are ethnically diverse, 39% are female, 26% are African American, 27% are Hispanic.
  • NJROTC instructors are retired or eligible reserve or medically disabled Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officer and enlisted personnel. Instructors are school employees. Salaries are determined by the rank of the instructor and equal at least the difference between retirement and active duty base pay and allowances. Half of that amount is reimbursed to the school by the Navy.

  • ​Meritorious Achievement Award

Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any NJROTC cadet who distinguishes him/herself only by outstanding meritorious achievement or performance of a meritorious act.
 

  • Distinguished Unit Award

    Awarded to cadets who were unit members during the academic year in which the school earned Distinguished Unit status.
     

  • Distinguished Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to one cadet in each year group with the highest combined average for overall scholastic standing and aptitude.
     

  • Honor Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to one cadet in each year group with the highest overall academic achievement in school.
     

  • Cadet Achievement Award

    Awarded, when earned, to any cadet who distinguishes him/herself by outstanding achievement or sustained superior performance.
     

  • Unit Achievement Award

    Awarded to cadets in good standing who were unit members during the academic year in which the school earned the Unit Achievement status as determined by the Area Manager. Awarded only to those units that demonstrated exceptional performance but did not qualify for Distinguished Unit status.
     

  • Aptitude Award

    Awarded to the top 10% of the cadets based on evaluation of academic performance of assigned jobs, conduct, unit involvement, attendance, and overall aptitude.
     

  • NS IV Outstanding Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 4 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance and conduct.
     

  • NS III Outstanding Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 3 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance and conduct.
     

  • NS II Outstanding Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 2 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance and conduct.
     

  • NS I Outstanding Cadet Award

    Awarded yearly to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 1 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance and conduct.
     

  • Exemplary Conduct Award

    Awarded early to each cadet who demonstrates exemplary conduct for the year.
     

  • Exemplary Personal Appearance

    Awarded twice yearly to all cadets that wear their uniform on all required occasions and have an average of 90% + on inspection and not received an inspection grade below an "A". (this award can be received 3 times in a year based on the results of the NJROTC Area Manager during annual inspection)
     

  • Physical Fitness Award

    Awarded twice a year to any cadet who meets or exceeds physical fitness standards to be given to you at a later time.
     

  • Participation Award

    Awarded when earned to all cadets earning one hour or more participation in at least three separate, non-social NJROTC sponsored events or activities (to include ushering at school events, flag detail, attendance at drill, field/athletic meets, and attendance on field trips).
     

  • Unit Service Award

    Unit Service and each subsequent award is earned when a cadet performs superior service to unit. The award may be for sustained service at a level above that normally required of other cadets or it may be for a specific act(s) of superior service.
     

  • Community Service Award

    Community Service ribbons and each subsequent NJROTC award are earned after 12 hrs of properly documented volunteer service.
     

  • Academic Team Award

    Awarded when earned, to each cadet in good standing who has been a member of the Academic Team.
     

  • Drill Team Award

    The drill team ribbon may be awarded to all cadets that earn 3 drill team pts, which include parades, meets, and other performances.
     

  • Color Guard Award

    Awarded when earned to any cadet in good standing who has performed as a member of the color guard for 3 events.
     

  • Marksmanship Team Award

    Awarded when earned to any cadet in good standing who has entered competition including all air-operated weapons.
     

  • Orienteering Award

    Awarded when earned to any cadet in good standing who has entered competition.
     

  • Inter-Service Competition Award

    Inter-Service Competition - Awarded to a cadet who has entered any inter-service, national level competition, such as CyberPatriot, JLAB, etc.; or for any SeaPerch Competition, regardless of service sponsorship. This ribbon cannot be awarded in addition to, or in lieu of, another team-specific ribbon. For example: It cannot be awarded for competing in a local, Area or postal multi-service drill, academic, marksmanship or orienteering meet.
     

  • Recruiting Award

    Awarded when earned to any cadet that is instrumental in the enrollment of two students or is part of a recruiting effort.
     

  • Leadership Training

    Awarded to any cadet upon completion of Basic Leadership Training, Leadership Academy or similar training approved by the area manager.
     

  • Sea Cruise Award

    Awarded to any cadet upon completion of an at sea cruise (vessel must cast off lines and be underway).
     

  • Lamp - Bronze

    Worn on the Honor Cadet Ribbon by each cadet who has earned an "A" in NS 1. First award of School Honor Roll.
     

  • Lamp - Silver

    Worn on the Honor Cadet Ribbon by each cadet who has earned an "A" in NS 2. Second award of School Honor Roll.
     

  • Lamp - Gold

    Worn on the Honor Cadet Ribbon by each cadet who has earned an "A" in NS 3 and also NS 4. Third award of School Honor Roll.
     

  • Anchor - Gold

    Worn by Cadet Team leader of the applicable NJROTC Teams.
     

  • Star - Bronze

  • Star - Gold
