Welcome Aboard Letter from the Director

On behalf of our Commanding Officer, CAPT Austin Duff, welcome to Officer Candidate School (OCS). This letter provides essential information regarding your arrival at the command. Please read it carefully and review it again to ensure complete understanding.

Required Actions
Arrival: Arrive on Saturday no later than 1200. If you experience any travel delays or anticipate arriving late, promptly communicate with your OCS point of contact.

Packing List: Review the Packing List section on this website for a comprehensive list of all required and recommended items to bring.

Transportation and Lodging: Do NOT share transportation or lodging with other candidates—no exceptions. Retain all travel and lodging receipts for reimbursement claims (e.g., taxi, shuttle service, hotel). Note that not all expenses are eligible for reimbursement, but you must provide receipts for any that are. Staff will assist with this process at the appropriate time.

Lodging Information for Early Arrivals:
  • If you are already at Naval Station Newport and staying at NGIS, Navy Lodge, or Susse Chalet, contact your assigned OCS point of contact to inform them of your current berthing location. They will provide instructions for transitioning to Nimitz Hall for check-in.
  • You will remain in your current accommodation until check-in at Nimitz Hall on Saturday morning.
  • Note: You are NOT authorized to eat in the galley until you have completed the check-in process.
  • Emergency Contact: If you encounter an emergency, contact the Command Duty Officer immediately at 401-862-4321.

Congratulations on your selection to Officer Candidate School (OCS), and thank you for committing to serve as a Naval officer. Earning a seat in OCS is an accomplishment achieved by only a select few who demonstrate the dedication and meet the rigorous screening requirements of the program.

To succeed in this program, you must showcase mental resilience, physical fitness, and an unwavering determination. Below are essential documents and resources for your pre-arrival preparations. Your recruiter should have provided these; if any are missing, please reach out directly to your recruiter.

  • Commitment To Success Form (NAVCRUIT 1131/15) – This checklist outlines the necessary information and documents for Officer Candidates to review with their recruiter to ensure readiness.
  • OCS Delayed Entry Program Guide – This guide covers Navy Core Values, general information, rank and insignia, qualification standards, and physical fitness requirements. Future Officer Candidates are advised to thoroughly study this guide and start memorizing the information in the Gouge section.
  • Navy Fitness and Nutrition Guide – This guide provides vital information on fitness and nutrition, ensuring candidates arrive healthy and prepared for training. Achieving or exceeding the minimum standard of Satisfactory Medium on all portions of the Navy Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) is essential for completing the program within the prescribed timeframe. Those unable to meet these standards may struggle with the course requirements.
  • Naval Station Newport Base Map – This map details the layout of Naval Station Newport, including the OCS check-in location and base hotels.
