Minimum Salary

Instructors employed must receive a salary that equals the difference between their retired pay and what they would earn if they were on active duty, minus incentive pay. The school (employer) is responsible for paying this full salary. The Navy reimburses the school for half of this minimum salary.

Salary Adjustments

The minimum salary for instructors usually changes twice a year. These changes are based on adjustments in active duty pay, the Consumer Price Index, and the Basic Allowance Housing (BAH) for the area. The Navy will notify schools and instructors of any changes in writing, through the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI).

Salary Reimbursement

Reimbursement calculations are based on a 30-day month. If an instructor starts or ends their employment during the month, their pay will be calculated based on the days they worked. For example, if an instructor starts on the 10th of the month, they will be paid for 21 days. If the minimum monthly salary is $2,557.52, they would earn $1,790.25 for those 21 days. The Navy would then reimburse the school $895.13. Note: The Navy cannot reimburse schools for instructors still on active duty, such as those on terminal leave.

Relocation Costs

If an instructor needs to relocate for the job, they must cover these costs themselves, unless the school agrees to pay some or all of the expenses. This should be discussed during the interview.

Benefits

Instructors usually receive the same benefits (like health insurance, retirement plans, sick leave, vacation, and holidays) as other teachers in the district. It's important to discuss these benefits during the employment interview.

Employment Notification

Once hired, instructors must immediately inform the NSTC NJROTC program manager through their area manager to ensure proper administrative processing and pay calculations.

Additional Duties

The main job of SNSI and NSI instructors is to manage and teach the NJROTC program. If they take on other duties, this must be agreed upon separately with the school, must not interfere with NJROTC responsibilities, and cannot be done during normal school hours.
