DO/CWO/WO Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ provides key information on reporting, lodging, training expectations, and available resources at the LDO/CWO/WO Academy.

Check-in Procedures

  • Report to: Callaghan Hall (Building 370), Room 301. (Follow signs to 3rd floor)
  • Time: 0700 in NWUs.
  • Required Items: Ensure you bring all required paperwork listed under the "Required Paperwork/Items" tab on this page.
  • Early Reporting: If you arrive before the "no earlier than" date on your orders, lodging costs will not be reimbursed.

Living Quarters

  • Room Reservations: Enough rooms are blocked for each class.
  • Booking: All students must reserve their rooms directly with Navy Inn at Naval Station Newport.

  • Booking Timeline: Reservations must be made at least two weeks before class convening. All rooms not reserved by the two week point will be released.
  • Failure to Reserve: If a student does not book in time, a Certificate of Non-Availability (CNA) is not authorized and will not be issued. Students must contact academy staff for alternative lodging arrangements at King Hall.

Meals & Amenities

  • Galley: Open for three meals a day, seven days a week.
  • Per Diem: Request advanced per diem to cover meal expenses; otherwise, you will need to pay out-of-pocket until your travel claim is resolved.
  • Base Amenities:
    • Officers' Club, Commissary, Exchange (medium size)
    • Barber Shop, Recreation Center, Internet Café
    • Package Store, Uniform Shop (not all CWO designators available)
    • Navy Federal Credit Union/Bank & ATMs (x2)
    • MWR Gym & Pool Facilities
    • Bowling Alley

Policies & Conduct

  • Alcohol Policy: Will be explained upon arrival.
  • Smoking & Tobacco Use: Designated boundaries will be explained on the first day.

Physical Training (PT)

  • Be physically prepared to train as a class regularly while at OTCN.
  • Naval Station Newport provides excellent facilities for fitness and recreation.

Internet Access & Communications

  • You will not have access to flankspeed email during training.
  • Wi-Fi is available at Navy Inn.

Class Collateral Duties

  • Class Division Officer: Liaison with instructors.
  • Wardroom Mess Treasurer: Manages class funds.
  • Admin Officer: Liaison with PERSO.
  • Academic Coordinator: Manages academic requirements and assignments.
  • Social Activities Coordinator: Plans graduation events, T-shirts, and plaques.
  • Master-at-Arms: Handles cleaning bill, supplies and facility issues.
  • ADP Officer: Assists with computer/IT needs.
  • Mail Orderly (2): Picks up mail Monday-Friday.
  • Athletic Coordinator: Muster class at gym.

  • Religious Accommodations: Must be requested on the first day of training.

Required Paperwork/Items

To ensure a smooth check-in process and minimize pay or travel-related issues, all students attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy must bring the following required paperwork and items:

Mustang University Required Paperwork

  • Endorsed Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Orders and any modifications
  • Copies of prescriptions from civilian physicians if taking prescription medication. At least one week’s worth of medication should be hand-carried.
  • Oath of Office (copy; original should have been mailed to PERS 806)

    To Help Minimize Pay Issues

    • Last Command & PSD Point of Contact info (POC Name/Phone/Fax/Address)
    • Loss/Detach Endorsement from detaching PSD
    • BAH Verification Paperwork (e.g., Government Housing Termination Letter, if applicable)
    • If traveling under DTS orders, your parent command is responsible for all pay requirements.

    To Help Minimize Travel and Travel Pay Issues

    • Plan travel through this “I” stop to your final Permanent Duty Station (PDS).
    • You will be available to depart (“fly”) after 1200 on graduation Friday.
    • Refer to the FAQ page for Per Diem amounts for food during travel.

    Important Notes

    Ensure you have your commissioned ID card and dependent ID cards updated before departing to keep DEERS information current. After commissioning, contact DEERS to confirm continuity of entitlements.

Physical Training

The Navy considers physical fitness as important as mental readiness. Students attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy are required to meet Navy Body Fat Standards upon arrival.

The goal of the Academy is to instill a “Culture of Fitness” that endures well beyond your training. Physical training classes are designed to maintain stamina, build endurance, and improve overall physical condition to ensure you meet the physical fitness requirements of military service.

For those interested, the swim qualification is optional and can be completed upon request.

Lodging Information

Commercial off-base lodging is not authorized while attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy. To accommodate students, NAVSTA Newport/Navy Inn has enough rooms blocked for each class. It is essential that students secure their reservations no later than two weeks prior to arrival.

  • Inform the associate that you are part of the LDO/CWO/WO Academy group.

If Lodging Is Unavailable

If you are unable to secure a reservation at NAVSTA Newport/Navy Inn, you will be directed to contact the Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN) staff. Arrangements will be made for on-campus lodging, which is in a barracks adjacent to the schoolhouse.
