Uniform Requirements

The uniform requirements for Limited Duty Officer (LDO), Chief Warrant Officer (CWO), and Warrant Officer (WO) students at Officer Training Command (OTC) Newport are designed to ensure professional appearance and readiness. Students are required to adhere to the seasonal uniform shifts announced by Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

Required Uniform Items

  • Navy Working Uniform (NWU) – daily wear
  • Full Dress Blue – Large Medals (OCT through APR)
  • Full Dress White – Large Medals (MAY through SEPT)
  • Service Khaki with Khaki Garrison cap
  • Combination cover (For Full Dress Whites and Blues)
  • Navy black shoes; brown uniform shoes authorized
  • Physical Training Uniform (PTU)
  • Business Casual and Smart Casual for class socials

Recommended Items

  • NWU Parka (with Black Fleece Liner)
  • Navy Cold Weather Black Parka
  • Navy black (Eisenhower) jacket
  • Navy issue watch cap and gloves
  • Command Ball Cap
  • Laptop / CAC Reader (For class notes and homework)
Additional Information

Seasonal uniform shifts take effect at 0001 on the first Monday of May for summer uniforms and at 0001 on the first Monday of October for winter uniforms. Students whose classes span both periods are required to bring both summer and winter uniforms. Physical training begins immediately upon arrival; students are expected to wear the Navy PTU 4-5 days a week.

Required Paperwork/Items

To ensure a smooth check-in process and minimize pay or travel-related issues, all students attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy must bring the following required paperwork and items:

Mustang University Required Paperwork

  • Endorsed Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Orders and any modifications
  • Copies of prescriptions from civilian physicians if taking prescription medication. At least one week’s worth of medication should be hand-carried.
  • Oath of Office (copy; original should have been mailed to PERS 806)
  • Recommended paperwork (not required to bring to class)
    • Overseas Screening (must be complete prior to arrival, if applicable)
    • Housing Checkout Form (overseas PCS only)
    • Junior Officer Legal Training (JOLT) Certificate (Completed on JKO within 1 month of reporting to class)

To Help Minimize Pay Issues

  • Last command CPPA Name/Phone/email address
  • Loss/Detach Endorsement from detaching command (Stamped Orders)
  • If traveling under DTS orders, your parent command is responsible for all pay requirements.

To Help Minimize Travel and Travel Pay Issues

  • At current PDS plan travel through this “I” stop to your final Permanent Duty Station (PDS).
  • You will be available to depart (“fly”) after 1200 on graduation Friday. early departures are not authorized.
  • Refer to the FAQ page for Per Diem amounts for food during travel.

Important Notes

Ensure you have your commissioned ID card and dependent ID cards updated before departing to keep DEERS information current. After commissioning, contact DEERS to confirm continuity of entitlements.

Physical Training

The Navy considers physical fitness as important as mental readiness. Students attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy are required to meet Navy Body Fat Standards upon arrival.

The goal of the Academy is to instill a “Culture of Fitness” that endures well beyond your training. Physical training classes are designed to maintain stamina, build endurance, and improve overall physical condition to ensure you meet the physical fitness requirements of military service.

For those interested, the swim qualification is optional and can be completed upon request.

Lodging Information

Commercial off-base lodging IS NOT authorized while attending the Limited Duty Officer/Chief Warrant Officer/Warrant Officer (LDO/CWO/WO) Academy. To accommodate students, NAVSTA Newport/Navy Inn has enough rooms blocked for each class. It is essential that students secure their reservations no later than two weeks prior to arrival.

How to Secure a Room

  • Call NAVSTA Newport/Navy Inn directly at (401) 367-4612.
  • Inform the associate that you are part of the LDO/CWO/WO Academy group.
  • Provide your group name and group ID# (listed in your class details).
  • The lobby desk is open 24/7 for assistance.

If Lodging Is Unavailable

If you are unable to secure a reservation at NAVSTA Newport/Navy Inn or Navy Lodge, you will be directed to contact the Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN) staff. Arrangements will be made for on-campus lodging, which is located in a barracks adjacent to the schoolhouse.
