NROTC 2- and 3-Year Scholarship Program Overview

The NROTC 2- and 3-Year Scholarships provide college students with the opportunity to complete their undergraduate education while preparing to serve as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. These scholarships cover tuition and other benefits, preparing students for commissioning as naval officers upon graduation.

Program Benefits

Tuition Assistance: Covers full tuition and mandatory fees OR room and board (up to $11,500 per academic year or the cost of on-campus living, whichever is less) at participating NROTC-affiliated schools.
Monthly Stipend: Provides a monthly living allowance to support academic and training success.
Additional Benefits: Includes uniforms and funds for required books and materials.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the NROTC 2- and 3-Year Scholarships, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. Enrollment at an NROTC Affiliated School: Must attend or be admitted to a college or university hosting or affiliated with an NROTC unit.
2. Academic Standing: Between 30 and 120 college semester hours (45 to 180 quarter hours).
3. Age: Must be under 27 by December 31 of the year of commissioning (age waivers up to 30 available for prior military service).
4. Physical and Medical Standards: Must meet Navy or Marine Corps physical fitness standards and pass a medical examination.
5. Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or in the process of obtaining citizenship.

Application Process

Students interested in the 2- and 3-Year NROTC scholarships should work with their school’s NROTC unit to complete the application process:
Non-Affiliated Students: Apply for a nomination from the Professor of Naval Science (PNS) at your NROTC unit, submit a personal statement on your motivation to become a Naval Officer, and complete the Applicant Fitness Assessment.
Current College Program Midshipmen (CP MIDN): Submit application materials, including transcripts, degree plans, required forms, and essays through the Officer Programs Management Information System (OPMIS) with NROTC unit endorsement.

Selection Process

The 2- and 3-Year selection boards convene annually in mid to late July, reviewing applicants in areas like leadership, academic performance, fitness, and degree plan. The application window typically opens on April 1. Evaluation considers suitability and potential as a future naval officer. Priority is given to students in Tier 1 and 2 technical majors and those who have completed calculus and physics. Candidates not awarded a 2-year scholarship are automatically considered for Advanced or Provisional Advanced Standing.

After Selection

Successful applicants are notified through their NROTC unit and must complete:
1. Medical Qualification: Complete a medical exam through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) or request a waiver.
2. Service Commitment: Sign an agreement to fulfill all program requirements and commission as a Navy or Marine Corps officer upon graduation.
3. Scholarship Activation: Once qualified, scholarship benefits, including subsistence payments, begin immediately upon commissioning as a midshipman.
