Navy Officer Development School (ODS), one of five officer training schools located at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, is a rigorous five-week course designed to prepare commissioned officers for the challenges and responsibilities of serving in the world’s most capable Navy. The program emphasizes the development of essential leadership qualities, aligning closely with the strategic priorities outlined in the Chief of Naval Operations Navigation Plan (NAVPLAN 2024).
ODS provides a comprehensive education that includes Naval Leadership, Administration, Naval Organization, Sea Power, Military Law, Military Indoctrination, Naval Warfare, and Damage Control. This program is tailored to build resilient leaders capable of navigating the complexities of modern naval operations, consistent with the Navy’s emphasis on readiness and strategic deterrence.
In line with the CNO NAVPLAN 2024, ODS pushes candidates to meet the highest standards of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. It aims to build a force that is mentally resilient and ready to uphold these values under any circumstance.
ODS is an essential element in preparing officers for the demands of the fleet. By integrating real-world scenarios and instructor-led case studies, the school ensures that graduates are prepared to perform their duties effectively and embody the core mission of the Navy. This is consistent with the NAVPLAN’s focus on “building warfighters” who are ready for immediate deployment and long-term leadership.
