Academic Overview

During your time at Officer Development School (ODS), you will receive foundational training in the following areas:

1. Military Indoctrination

You will learn fundamental military customs, naval terminology, uniform requirements, inspection protocols, and essential training standards. This foundation prepares you to embody Navy values and meet the high standards expected of all officers.

2. Naval Leadership

Courses cover leadership qualities, motivational theories, team building, management skills, decision-making, goal-setting, and communication. You’ll have multiple opportunities to practice and develop your leadership through hands-on applications.

3. Division Officer

This course prepares you with essential knowledge on topics like military rank structure, performance evaluations, enlisted record management, and officer administration. Mastery of these areas is critical for effective team leadership.

4. Military Law

Explore key aspects of military law, including the Military Code of Conduct, Geneva Convention, Uniform Code of Military Justice, and more. Familiarity with these topics ensures you’re well-prepared for the legal responsibilities of an officer.

5. Programs and Policies

This section includes vital resources and policies such as suicide awareness, Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA), Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR), and Tricare benefits.

Military Training

The military training portion of ODS includes the following categories:

1. Physical Training

Expect regular physical training sessions, encompassing warm-ups, running, strength and conditioning, and cool-down stretches. Staying physically prepared aligns with Navy standards and mission readiness.

2. Room and Personnel Inspections

Your room and personal appearance will be inspected to ensure they meet Navy standards. Maintaining these high standards demonstrates discipline and respect for Navy traditions.

3. Drill

Approximately 20-25 hours will be dedicated to mastering drill procedures, culminating in your ODS graduation ceremony.

4. Navy Third Class Swimmer Qualification

To qualify, you must complete a series of swim requirements, including jumping from a 10-foot platform and completing a 50-yard swim.

5. Shipboard Damage Control

Gain hands-on experience in shipboard damage control, including firefighting and chemical, biological, and radiological defense training.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from ODS, you must:

  • Complete the 5-week Officer Development School program
  • Meet Navy physical fitness standards
  • Pass the Navy Third Class Swimmer Qualification
  • Complete both Wet Trainer and Firefighter damage control exercises
  • Pass the comprehensive Navy Officership exam
